Junior School

Doors Open

Gates open at 8.00 a.m. From that time, any boys arriving are supervised. The duty member of staff will let the boys into the school buildings, where they organise their belongings for the school day ahead. Boys are directed to the library, where they read, borrow books and take Accelerated Reader quizzes until Form Time.

Form Time/Registration

Form Time occurs from 8.25 a.m. – 8.45 a.m. The Form Teacher registers the Form and disseminates information to the pupils, checks organisation, checks pupil diaries, monitors Plus Points, as well as standard of dress, and collects in any correspondence for the respective school offices. Registration is taken at 8.30 a.m. A boy not registered by the end of Form Time/Registration at 8.45 a.m. is to be noted as absent.

Lessons Schedule (Junior School)

Please see the schedule tables at the bottom of this page.

The aim of the Enrichment Programme is to enhance the boys’ critical thinking and to develop new life skills. Activities include cooking, philosophy, yoga, engineering and debating to name but a few. We hope that these new skills and experiences will benefit the boys and provide them with a well-rounded education. Enrichment activities take place between 3.10 p.m. and 4.00 p.m.

Assembly occurs at 8.45 a.m. (Lesson 1) every Monday. The Assemblies schedule is found in each staffroom. All pupils and staff attend. Classes are escorted to the Hall at Haven Green Baptist Church by the Form Teacher, where they sit in their Forms, supervised by him/her. Assembly finishes at 9.20 a.m.

Break Time

Junior school boys line up in pairs at the rear of school, in the Junior School Garden, ready to be escorted to Castlebar Field. The Lead Teacher holding the Castlebar key and emergency phone, is at the gate no later than 10.35 a.m. to supervise the boys. Other duty teachers are punctual so that break can get under way on time.

At Castlebar Field, any snack is consumed only on the paved area around the pavilion. Staff members spread themselves around the whole field and tennis courts, making sure that all pupils are in sight. Boys should not be in the wooded areas that surround the field, unless supervised.

Boys should be lined up ready to leave for the return to school no later than 11.05 a.m. The Lead Teacher on duty will signal line up with a blow of the whistle. Staff make sure that litter has been binned and any clothing picked up.

Wet Break will be decided by the Lead Teacher on duty, 5-10 minutes before break is due to start. Duty teachers patrol all form rooms concerned, dividing the areas among them.

Sometimes boys play fixtures against other schools and may arrive back at school at later times. They are then supervised by a member of staff accompanying the fixture.

Games lessons are held on Monday, beginning Lesson 8 for Year 3 and Year 4. Pupils arrive at school on Games days wearing the appropriate Games kit.

Boys return from Games in time to leave school at 4.30 p.m. Some boys are collected at Swyncombe, but only those whose parents have officially informed the school.

House Meetings and Utility Sessions

On Thursday mornings at 8.45 a.m. (Lesson 1), the school operates a bi-weekly system of either a House Meeting (Whole House Meetings or House Vertical Group Meetings) or a Utility Session. The Utility Session allows time for the Music Department to rehearse Choirs and other musical groups, with boys being removed from their Form Classes. Boys not involved in any musical group remain with their Form Teachers for a period of sustained silent reading.

All pupils eat lunch in the Form Rooms. Years 3-4 are supervised by the Lunchtime Supervisors and/or duty staff members for that day. Boys do not leave the rooms without permission from the Duty Teacher. Junior school boys line up in pairs at the rear of school, in the Junior School Garden, ready to be escorted to Castlebar Field, at 12.45 p.m.

Staff eat lunch in the staffroom.

Off Games

Pupils who are unable to go to Games because of injury, recuperation from illness or an external appointment are classified as ‘Off Games’. They are only excused Games if a letter of request has been received by the Head of Junior School (notes in prep diaries or notes to Form Teachers are not sufficient). Off Games boys are supervised by a member of staff. The Duty Teacher registers the boys, according to the Off Games list prepared by the School Office. The register is held in the office. Boys are to read, catch up on work or be occupied with an activity set by the Head of P.E., but no prep is to be done at this time.

The End of the Day

At the end of the day, whether a Games day or not, boys in Junior School collect their belongings from their Form Room and the Cloakroom.

Once suitably dressed, boys leave school through the rear gate at Junior School unless they are due to attend After School Care or an Activity.

Boys who are due to go to an Activity, must go there directly from Form Rooms at the end of the day. Boys who are due to go to After School Care will be taken to the allocated room.
